BROWN FELLOWS PROGRAM

BROWN FELLOWS PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Brown Fellows Program (BFP) was founded in 2009 with the intent of creating an unparalleled program spanning two very different Kentucky campuses. For almost 15 years, the BFP has challenged exceptional students intellectually, broadened their perspectives, nurtured their commitment to service, developed their leadership abilities, and deepened their understanding of and connection to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Brown Fellows Program will sunset in 2027, and when the program concludes:

  • Approximately 300 students will have successfully completed the program with transformational experiences.
  • JGBF will have invested nearly $27,000,000 in the program over 19 years.
  • Over 30 faculty members and staff will have been engaged as mentors, coordinators, and other leadership roles.
  • Six campus presidents will have been involved with the program.

While the program will come to an end, the Brown Fellows alumni network will continue to serve as leaders and ambassadors for the state of Kentucky.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS:

At its core, the The Brown Fellows Program is a scholarship program. Students selected to become Brown Fellows receive a comprehensive scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition, room, board, books, and fees. But the power of the program lies in the vast array of experiences and supports that the program provides including:

  • Faculty mentors that advise and support students from day one to graduation day;
  • Travel experiences including an international trip and eight trips that explore different regions of Kentucky;
  • Funding for two summer enrichment projects. From medical work in Ecuador, to a publishing internship in Washington, to engineering work at NASA, to an archeological dig in Jerusalem, students are only limited by their imagination;
  • An annual Leadership Initiative (LINC) that enables students to interact with a variety of leaders from across the state of Kentucky.;
  • A service immersion experience and the opportunity to continue service throughout the college experience;
  • A community of fellows that interact across campuses and class years that builds lifelong friendships and a dynamic exchange of ideas; and
  • Access to a network of alumni across the globe;

WHAT OUR FELLOWS SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAM

“The most distinctive thing about the Brown Fellows Program is the opportunity to see the world and discover what you want to discover”
- Maddy Trinh, Class of 2024

“The program has shaped my whole approach to college because it allowed me to focus on learning and growth for their own sake. It gives you very direct opportunities to be able to explore [your] interests with the enrichment projects. It gives you the ability to say “I’m interested in this and I can devote myself to it for a summer.”
- Amelia Lorrey, Class of 2021

“My parents always emphasized that the world is bigger than Spartanburg, South Carolina and I was able to come here and find people that thought that as well. This is the premier opportunity to experience the state of Kentucky and to grow to appreciate it—to understand its high points and its difficulties and to develop a sense of appreciation for it and go on and be an advocate for it. This is an important place to me now, I am a stakeholder in the state’s future.”
- Luke Martin, Class of 2021
